On March 18th, 2010 in Nikopol, Chitalishte's representatives from the municipality (villages of Asenovo, Vabel, Debovo, Evlogievo, Jernov, Muselievo, Novachene, Sanadinovo, Cherkovica) as well as from neighboring municipalities gathered to participate in a meeting for sharing experience and good practices. Chitalishte "Napredak 1871" presented the local initiative "Nikopols' Spiritual Leaders - the Big Capital of the Small Town", supported by AGORA Platform and funded by America for Bulgaria Foundation.
In the course of the meeting, the project team members shared the challenges they faced, the satisfaction and results accomplished with the community support and local authorities involvement. They had the opportunity to develop, apply and promote the mechanism for stimulating civic activity in small settlements through the Chitalishte. Among the most interesting moments were the forum debates related with identification of ideas for the memorable plate of the Nikopol's spiritual leaders and the Municipal Program for Celebrating the Day of Bulgaria's Spiritual Leaders.
The emphasis was on the kick off of the fundraising campaign with a Charitable Carnival "Give a Gift - be Blessed" in October 2009. The fundraising campaign is continuing and till now 237 individual and legal entities have donated money, books and objects and the total donations raised are 3 376 BGN. The geography of the donor's includes representatives from all 14 locations in Nikopol Municipality, as well as from 9 Bulgarian cities and even from Australia! The fundraising efforts resulted in 1674 BGN (cash) where four donors have contributed more than once.
Further, the initiatives of the other five partner Chitalishtes in the "Activating Communities through the Chitalishte Community Cultural Centers in Bulgaria" project were presented. Ms. Bojidara Ilieva, AGORA Platform's Programme Coordinator shared with the 35 participants, information about the grassroots civic initiatives carried out with participation in Topolovgrad, Koprivshtitsa, Cherven Briag, Momchilovtsi (Smolyan Municipality), Kurtovo Konare (Stamboliiski Municipality) for the last few months.
Earlier in the day, for seventh year in a row the Contest "Painted Egg" was held with eight student teams from the primary school. While the 32 little artists enthusiastically painted the plaster eggs with the single thought to get the first prize, their teachers discussed in the renovated library how to carry out a Reading Marathon. The idea is to organize a chain reading of poems for children from the book "Dear Grandchild" by the local poetess Julia Ivanova during the Week of the Children Books and Arts in April 2010. At the end of the Contest "Painted Egg" each team was awarded with book, puzzle and certificate. Traditionally, the painted eggs are showed in an exhibition that is on display in the Chitalishte building.
