Frequently Asked Questions on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights

Thursday, 24 March 2016

In 2008 in Geneva Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights published Fact Sheet No 33 focused on Frequently Asked Questions on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

Motivation for production of the publication became the increased attention of non governmental organizations, academia, governments and judiciary to the protection of economic, social and cultural rights. It seemed that renaissance for protection of these rights raisen on national and international level. But then together with a sense of academic neglect, lack of clarity on substance and lack of civil society engagement misunderstandings and misconceptions appeared demonstrating the harms of lack of information, knowledge and expertise.

Thus in order to fight incorrect ideas Fact Sheet No33 appeared seeking to demystify economic, social and cultural rights. Publication is organized in 20 chapters discussing: economic, social and cultural rights differencies from civil and political rights; obligations of States on economic, social and cultural rights; monitoring mechanisms for progressive realization of economic, social and cultural rights; role of Governments, people and Millennium development goals for prevention of economic, social and cultural rights.

Full text of the publication may be reached here: available only in EN.

This publication is produced with the financial support of the EU and Republic of Turkey. Association "Platform AGORA" is responsible for the content of this document and can in no way be interpreted as the opinion of the EU and/or the Republic of Turkey.
